Flouride
Flouride is a really important chemical that is in toothpaste and now in our water. Some people are worried that having Flouride in our tap water could cause severe damage to our body. Flouride has not been tested outside of the mouth and could have a horrible affect on our body. Flouride also used to be ilegal and is a key chemical in rat poison. People do think that Flouride shouldnt be added to our tap water to keep our teeth healthy because of the many other risks it could have on a persons body.
I do not think that the government should add Flouride to our water because of the health risks that comes with it. I dont think the issue the government should be worried about is tooth decay when there are other important health issues that is could cause. If the government puts flouride in our tap water there is a chance people could get brain damage, immune system alteration, musculiskeletal harm, thyroid dysfunction, and in some cases cancer. This could kill thousands of people and it is a very big risk just for better dental health.
There have not been very many advances in technology in toothpaste before Flouride. A man named McKay found Flouride in drinking water and thought it would be a good idea to test it with other compounds. He finally found that the best way to make toothpaste was with an abrasive. He created three different compounds and called them stannousflouride, sodium flouride, and sodium monoflourophosphate. He found out that if the amount was below 1 PPm it was safe.
